Alberto Gonzales chosen to be AG

An announcement from the White House is expected later today, but sources indicate that White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales will be chosen to replace outgoing Attorney General John Ashcroft. Gonzales, if confirmed by the US Senate, will become the first Hispanic Attorney General in US history.

Two administration officials said Gonzales, a longtime Bush friend who served with him in Texas, was the likely successor to Ashcroft and that the president could act as early as Wednesday. He would be the first Hispanic attorney general.
Ashcroft, along with Commerce Secretary Don Evans, tendered resignation letters to the Administration yesterday.
